Welcoming Baby Lily: A Family Portrait Session at Home

I recently spent a morning with Alex and Megan, who’ve just welcomed their daughter, Lilly. She was only a few weeks old at the time, still in that quiet, sleepy stage.

We did most of the session at Megan’s family home, where the three of them (plus their dog Roo) are staying for now. It’s a house filled with history for Megan, and now it’s the backdrop for the start of this next chapter.

Everything was relaxed. Lilly slept through most of the shoot, unaware as to what was going on, and Roo wandered around, occasionally sniffing around Lilly, wondering who this new family member was.

Familiar Spaces, New Memories

Photographing families at home always brings out something real. You can sense the comfort people feel in their own space, and the photos tend to reflect that. There's no need to perform, the moments just unfold naturally.

We moved through different rooms depending on the light, never rushing. The idea was to document life as it was that morning , cuddles, quiet moments, and Roo keeping a close eye on it all.

A Visit To Their Future Home

After the bulk of the shots were taken in the family home, we took a short walk to their new house, which is currently in the final stages of construction just down the road. While we were standing outside about to go in, they realised something that made the moment even more meaningful: this was Lily’s very first visit to the new home.

We stepped inside briefly, took a few photos, and captured a quiet moment that’ll likely mean a lot in years to come.

Moments That Stood Out

This session was full of gentle, everyday moments that told a bigger story. Some of the details I focused on included:

  •         Alex and Megan cradling Lily’s tiny hands and feet, completely in awe of her
  •         The quiet comfort of Lilly sleeping on her dad’s chest, perfectly still and peaceful
  •         Soft light falling across the living room as Megan looked down at her daughter, smiling without saying a word
  •         Roo the dog keeping watch nearby, occasionally nudging into frame like he didn’t want to miss a thing
  •         The walk down to their new house, and the quiet moment they realised it was Lily’s first time inside
  •         A photo of Megan holding Lilly by the window, framed against the space that will soon become their family home

More Than A Portrait

This session was more than just a newborn shoot, it was a marker of a transitional moment in their lives: becoming parents, living temporarily in a place full of memories, and preparing to settle into a home of their own.

To Alex and Megan, thank you for inviting me into this chapter. I hope these images always bring you back to the significance of these early days.

If you’d like to capture your own family story, I’d love to hear from you.
